It is simply not enough to demand that multinational corporations uphold the rights of workers and comply with environmental standards in their operations in the developing world when they are doing business with repressive and violent regimes.

They enjoy unparalleled political and economic power and influence, and are complicit in the crimes committed by the regimes in the countries where they are doing business. Multinational corporations can no longer be treated as private entities disconnected from the social and political conditions of the countries in which they operate; they are the most powerful players in those countries, and they have the greatest influence over the policies of those regimes. Multinational corporations are political entities, and they must be dealt with as such.
