What is all the fuss about with the Hamza Yusuf clip criticising the Syrian revolution? Because he laughed? Because he cited a dubious hadith? Be serious. The substance of his remarks was spot-on, and correct both Islamically and logically.
Hamza Yusuf has always gotten on my nerves. I feel like he was supposed to be a character on the sitcom “Friends”. But there is not a thing wrong with what he said. You all are mad, but can you explain to me how the effort in Syria was a good idea?
And we’ve got Dalia Mogahed saying “We must indeed do better as an ummah. This is not in conflict with ALSO working against injustice”…yeah, did you though? Did you work against injustice? Or, in fact, when you rise up without the capacity to do so, and you predictably achieve the intensification of oppression, have you not actually just worked FOR injustice?
If you are getting into the ring with a heavyweight, you had better make sure you are not a featherweight. That’s all Muslim Chandler Bing was saying, and if you do not understand the rational, realistic basis for this position, life itself must be an unending mysterious series of unconnected random events for you, and every failure is an inexplicable, arbitrary occurrence; and I wonder how you feed and clothe yourself.
