Someone sent me a message claiming that the Ikhwan caused Citibank to pull out of Egypt. This is nonsense. First of all, Citibank is not actually pulling out of Egypt. They are closing their retail banking services for regular individual customers. That means personal bank accounts, loans, credit cards and so on.
They are continuing their corporate and institutional banking services.
Neoliberal policies create massive inequality of wealth in the society, which means that large foreign banks generally can only achieve meaningful profits by focusing directly on the elite; corporations and investment firms, etc.
The closure of consumer banking services by Citibank is not exclusively in Egypt, but in 10 other countries as well, including Japan. Unless you believe that the Ikhwan’s plans reach from the Far East, to Hungary and the Czech Republic, all the way to Nicaragua; you can be sure the move by Citibank has nothing to do with them.
