Literally any group of people can accurately cite historical disadvantages. I’m Irish, so don’t get me started. We can all agree that Black people in the US can perhaps lay claim to the greatest historical disadvantage in the country (arguably surpassed only by Native Americans). I am not sure what productive value there is, however, in this acknowledgement.
White Liberals who are seeking absolution to free them from a sense of collective guilt may feel better about themselves by tearfully confessing the suspected sins of their ancestors (my people were serfs and indentured servants in Ireland and emigrated to the US well after slavery — we are not all Mayflower families, you know), but it is pretty obnoxious to think this will improve the lives of Black people in any way.
