Just a tidbit from history:
In 1879, during the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes, Democrats sought a repeal of election laws to enforce the 14th and 15th Amendments granting equal voting rights for African-Americans
“The practical object of the ‘so-called’ Democrats is very plain,” Rutherford B. Hayes heard from his friend Judge William Johnston of Cincinnati. “They want to kill with impunity so many negroes as may be necessary to frighten the survivors from the polls in the South; and . . . [they want] to stuff the ballot-boxes of New York after the manner of 1868.”
