Muslim thinkers were developing arts and sciences more than five centuries before the Renaissance in Europe, and were addressing the issues of individual rights and freedoms, and the role of rationality and reason, over a millennium before the Enlightenment. If there is a compatibility issue between the West and Islam, it is similar to the often awkward relationship between an adolescent and their elders.
