It is amazing to me how inept #Telenor’s PR and Marketing department is. 94% of townships covered by Telenor mobile service “in whole or in part”? Are they serious?
If a child tells his parents that he has completed 94% of his homework “in whole or in part”; he is basically saying he hasn’t done it. If there is one Telenor customer in one township, Telenor will claim that this township is 100% partly covered. It is laughable.
The fact is that Myanmar is the only country in the region where Telenor is growing at all; and the reason they are not growing elsewhere is directly related to their intransigence regarding the Rohingya genocide. They may well succeed in expanding their market share in Myanmar, which stands at around 40% in actual numbers; but that limited growth will be at the expense of the entire Southeast Asian market.
Who on earth is advising them? It is possible that they are able to remain this myopic because of the Norwegian government’s stake in the company, but they are in the process of decreasing that stake. Telenor seriously needs to re-think their strategy. and start living up to the values they claim publicly to believe in.
Creative interpretations of market share statistics are not going to fool stock holders, traders, or investors. Everyone can see that Telenor is on a downward spiral in the region, and the only way to reverse that decline is to finally take a moral stand on the Rohingya issue, support UN recommendations, and condemn genocidal violence
