There are a few points here…
First, obviously, rail transport is actually the LEAST environmentally friendly form of transport, so that is just a complete lie.
Second, as I have written about before, Qalaa Holdings is in fact a limb of foreign investors and the US government. They have positioned themselves to both promote and benefit from the Neoliberal program by focusing on specific industrial sectors such as transport, energy, and agriculture. They were particularly zealous about pushing for suspension of fuel subsidies because their own investment projects would benefit from higher fuel costs for businesses and consumers.
For revolutionary purposes, however, it is important to analyze this step, and the stated logic behind it.
Rail transport is an attractive option for multinationals to move their goods between countries because, yes, it is cheaper. So, Mansour Automotive Company, for instance, can transfer parts for General Motors from Egypt to assembly plants in Kenya, and ship the completed products back for distribution with less difficulty and expense.
But, of course, rail transport can also be disrupted with less difficulty and expense.
These company announcements are full of information you can use. Qalaa “recently purchased 500 flat wagons…the first batch (120 wagons) of which is due to arrive at the end of September”. They are telling you detailed information about their capacity; and that capacity is a key factor in investor confidence and support. Essentially, they are telling you how you can undermine them, if you pay attention.
