The notion that the US has “abdicated” in Syria is false in every way. The US government has adopted a deliberate policy of perpetuating a stalemate; ensuring that no side will win the fight, but making sure that the fight continues.
There is a clear agenda to break Syria up into mini-states, one of which will likely be ruled by Bashar, and each of which will be devastated and helpless, and completely dependent on foreign aid and investment.
The only question is : how much destruction and suffering will be required before a partition settlement can be accepted by all parties on the ground?
The US is perfectly willing to prolong the bloody stalemate for as long as it takes to achieve their own geopolitical and economic aims in Syria, even if it requires Aleppo to be duplicated in every city for years to come.
