Whether you were born Muslim and taught kufr all your life, or you were born Muslim and miseducated all your life to believe that the cultural practices of your community are Islamic; you can only become a true Muslim by consciously choosing Islam at some point.
When you consciously choose Islam, it doesn’t matter where you come from; you will have to turn your back on most of the cultural identity you had before. And when you choose to be serious about Islam, you will become a stranger in your community, a foreigner in your country, even if it is a Muslim community.
You will connect with others on the basis of their commitment to Islam, like people from the same town who suddenly meet in a foreign country.
Others will still try to relate to you according to the framework within which they define their own identities (kufr, jahiliyyah, nationality, ethnicity, etc), but this will only amplify the disconnection between you and that framework.
