The parallels between the Truth Commission in Tunisia and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa should be obvious.
It is a show to boost investor confidence, very much like the South African experience; lamenting the abuses of Western-backed authoritarian rule without any sign that the domestic power structure, and the class of elites who benefited from the abuses, will be penalized or dismantled in any way. In other words, “Don’t worry, we are smoothing over the grievances of the population, and thereby pacifying them, and we can carry on just as before.”
