They convince you that you have needs you do not have so that you forget your real needs; and they make you want what they sell you, so you forget what they steal from you.
They arouse in you desires and urges and greed, and this lays the foundation of your dependence upon them.
The antidote for this, of course, is the Sunnah of Zuhd. A contented man who does not chase the dunya, is impossible to dominate.
