Polio outbreak in Syria…
First time in 15 years. The strain of the virus is believed to have originated in Pakistan.
Outbreak is in Az-Zur which is, coincidentally, an oilfield, and , coincidentally, under the control of Jabhat an-Nusra. UN to undertake vaccination campaign in the country and surrounding region, aiming to immunize 20 million. Rough cost estimate : $5 million
OK…so here you potentially have further aftermath from the CIA program in Pakistan using immunization as a front for intelligence-gathering. Vaccinations were blocked due to this, and so, possibly the virus has been carried from there all the way to Syria via fighters from Pakistan.
That is, maybe the best case scenario, and it is not actually very likely. The WHO says adults are rarely transmitters of polio, and says that the “mode of transmission will probably never be known”.
