It seems apt to share this now. I have been involved in the case of Sheikha Latifa since her escape, through my work with @[147258732115:274:Detained in Dubai] I am immensely proud of the work I have had the privilege of doing with @[659028139:2048:Radha Stirling] on this case; and the ruling by Sir Andrew McFarlane in the UK that was reported today confirming that Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum violated international law, maritime law, and all norms of human rights when he abducted Latifa off the coast of India, almost exactly two years ago today, gives me an enormous sense of vindication.
Two years ago, we had to push like mad to overcome the fear of the British press to even cover Latifa’s escape and capture; today, not only has a British court ruled that a terrible crime was committed, it refused to suppress that ruling from the public record.
What I wrote two years ago may have been somewhat premature, but today it holds true:
“It is unlikely that he can survive this. Latifa said that her father is ruthlessly concerned with his own reputation, and he has carefully interwoven his own image with that of Dubai. After everything that has occurred; and with the likelihood of a criminal investigation at the highest levels of international justice; his reputation is not going to recover, and that means he himself has become a liability to Dubai’s image.”
