The Prophet said: If anyone brings barren land into cultivation, it belongs to him”
The term food security, the idea that everyone should have access to sufficient daily nutrition, is basically good. But, it kind of leaves out some major parts of the real equation. To only talk about access to nutrition, fails to address the issue of monopolization of food supply, for instance. If we are only talking about food security, in fact, it can even be used to justify the massive level of control exercised by agribusinesses like Monsanto and Cargill, Conagra, ADM, and the other huge corporations. So, even though it sounds nice…talking about “food security” actually leaves in place what is possibly the greatest single threat TO food security, the concentrated domination of the world’s food system by a handful of companies.
The concept of “food sovereignty” is much more useful. The Via Campesina peassants’ movement coined the term years ago, it means basically that the people who grow, distribute and consume the food should be the ones to define the food system. And this concept is much more in line with Islamic principles.
