Any talk about declining American power needs to be clarified. American power has not declined at all, what has happened is that other countries have increased in their power.
The US is the largest economy in the world, several times larger than the next three or four economies combined. Trans-Pacific trade only exists because of America. US military spending exceeds, again, the next several countries combined. American naval vessels freely patrol every ocean on earth. They oversaw the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan while sustaining fewer casualties than they suffered in Vietnam. US power is stronger than it has ever been.
When America talks about being threatened, that does not mean an existential threat to US survival, it means a threat to America’s unparalleled global hegemony. US global dominance is not challenged by any global superpower, but it perceives a threat to its hegemony by regional superpowers such as Russia, China, and Turkey. The way the US handles this threat is by stirring up crises for its perceived rivals, to drain their energy and resources, to isolate them, and to keep them preoccupied. As I have written before, the US is not concerned about “winning” wars, it is interested in prolonging wars that destabilize US rivals.
Putin has come to Egypt, primarily because Russia has lost most of its regional clients, and their influence in the Middle East has been greatly diminished. His visit represents an attempt to maintain Russian relevance in the region.
