When I say that targeting of the corporate imperial power structure should be the focused strategy of the revolution, this, of course, includes any number of tactical options, including demonstrations and civil-disobedience. I have never said that demonstrations are not a useful tactic, if they are directed against a useful target.
There are primarily two types of demonstrations; expressive and disruptive. An expressive demonstration means to publicly express views of the opposition, to show that there is a large segment of the population that does not approve of the government or rejects certain policies. This type of demonstration basically supposes that the government will, or can, respond to popular demands, and is vulnerable to public pressure. In my opinion, that is not the case in Egypt today.
Another reason for expressive demonstrations is to raise awareness about a particular issue, and I think this is still a potentially very useful thing to do. Demonstrate against the ban on third-party challenges to foreign investor activities; demonstrate against the Economic Summit; demonstrate against privatization; demonstrate against giving half of all energy production to multinationals; etc, etc. This can raise awareness about the mechanisms of imperial domination, and that is definitely useful.
Disruptive demonstrations aim to cause actual disturbances to the power structure. These are essentially the same as expressive demonstrations except that they are held at locations chosen to confront power and cause disruption to its operations. Again, this is highly useful, in my opinion. Demonstrate at the corporate offices of the companies who finance, support, and benefit from the Coup, for example, rather than in public squares.
