You may think that what happened in Argentina, or in Guatemala, …

Posted on February 21, 2015 by Shahid Bolsen

You may think that what happened in Argentina, or in Guatemala, or anywhere else, is irrelevant to Egypt. You may think that Egypt is unique; Egypt’s military is unique; the circumstances are unique; etc etc. But what is largely irrelevant here is the uniqueness. We are not talking so much about Egypt, as we are talking about the forces which are dominating Egypt. We are talking about how they have operated elsewhere in the past, how they operate everywhere, and yes, how they are operating in Egypt today.

The Egyptian security forces are not going to differ much from the Argentinian security forces; nor from the security forces in the Philippines, nor in El Salvador, nor Guatemala, nor Iraq. None of these entities are peculiar or special because they have all been funded, armed, trained, and are controlled by, and serve, the same masters. The same logic, the same strategies, the same tactics, the same methods of torture, the same types of atrocities, the same brutality, are all part of a model which is uniformly applied by these masters throughout the world.

It does not require much deep knowledge and experience of Egypt to know what those masters will do, because what they do is basically the same everywhere they go.

You can develop your responses to that model by studying the responses which were attempted by others before you. If you imagine that the scenario in Egypt is unique, you will certainly repeat the failed strategies of others. It should be obvious that the strategies of targeting the security forces, of retaliation, of armed guerrilla campaigns, the strategy of civil war, are not particularly novel ideas, and have always been the reflex reaction of opposition groups everywhere.

It is helpful to find out if they have ever worked. And if they ever have worked, it is helpful to study what were the major factors which enabled them to succeed.

The historical reality, however, is that they have failed far more often than they have succeeded; and very often, even if the population resists armed conflict with the military, the government itself will instigate violent opposition, precisely because it is almost always the State which benefits from such movements.

While the people are busy in skirmishes with the security apparatus, business carries on undisturbed. The masters solidify their control.
