“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.” (2:168)
It is informative that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala indicates here that men may tend to begin to follow the path of Shaytaan in their pursuit of provision. This is a warning against greed and indulgence, but also a warning against dissatisfaction and ingratitude.
When acquisition of more and more wealth, food, goods, etc, becomes more prominent in a person than contentment and simplicity, this appetite can drive him into all sorts of corruption.
That being said, it is also the shared responsibility of society and the state to ensure that the basic needs of the population are met, because poverty and desperation for provision are clearly indicated here as vulnerabilities for human beings because of which they may potentially descend along a destructive and evil path.
