Posted on September 4, 2015 by Shahid Bolsen

The point of creating petitions about specific issues is not to try to get the regime to concede on those issues (the regime is not allowed to do so). Rather, petitions are only a device for trying to educate the population about those issues.

The point of this is to create grassroots support beyond the restrictive limitations of the existing parties and groups, and to build the kind of popular solidarity which is necessary if you are going to engage in more confrontational forms of opposition.

The great majority of Egyptians are anti-secular and anti-neoliberal. The Islamist parties are anti-secular, but mostly pro-neoliberal; and the Leftists are anti-neoliberal but pro-secular. We need to stop supporting parties, and start supporting policies; this is not only the key to building solidarity, it is the key to achieving positive change.
