Regarding street protests; forgive me if this is all already obvious to you…
Understand that resort to overwhelming force (gas, water cannons, gunfire, etc) is undertaken by security forces because their men do not have the skills or capability to handle a confrontation without the support of disproportionate violence.
Yes, they do have access to the instruments of disproportionate violence, but it is useful to realize that they need this precisely because of their weakness and incompetence.
An individual policeman or soldier in a crowd control situation, is at a great disadvantage. His helmet, his shield, his baton, his body armor, etc; all of these restrict his mobility, limit his field of vision, interfere with his equilibrium, and slow him down. Furthermore, he is dependent upon his radio communications, when he can’t hear his commander’s instructions, he will be confused, and very likely, scared.
Also, the police and army operate very rigidly according to their training, using strict formations and movements, and often according to a regimented series of responses in measurable intervals. All of these are observable and predictable. And these are weaknesses.
In a confrontation situation, try to see this. See that a policeman with a baton and a shield is a man with his hands full; a policeman in a helmet is a man with diminished sight and hearing capacities, and a man more easily thrown off balance. If it is strapped under his chin, the helmet’s weight can be used against him. Sufficient noise around a policeman will render him unable to hear instructions, at which point he will likely retreat.
By now, I assume you have learned the standard tactics and the series of responses of the police in street confrontations. You should know how long it takes them to resort to the use of overwhelming violence, or what conditions prompt them to employ force. Use this knowledge to your advantage. For example; disburse and change location; anticipate police responses, and do not do what they expect.
