Food is energy. Basically, excess body fat simply reveals how much more energy you consume than you use. Your body thinks you know what you are doing when you consume energy; if you consume way more than you need, your body will assume that you will need it eventually, so it will store the energy as fat.
Your appetite can be a liar, your fat tells the truth; it shows, quite plainly, that you are not nearly as active as your appetite would otherwise indicate.
So, the key is to balance the ratio of energy you consume with the energy you use.
