Just to give you an idea of the kind of thing you CAN’T legally challenge because of the new Egyptian law written by foreign investors while the people were clashing in the streets…
Egyptian investment firm Citadel Capital received funding from the US government via Citibank to buy controlling shares in 10 companies in 5 core industries, helping foreign investors dominate the key sectors of Egypt’s economy, and thus, the society at large.
One of these companies is the Egyptian Refining Company (ERC). According to Citadel’s shareholders’ report,
“Government officials view ERC as a cornerstone of the nation’s energy security.”
That cornerstone now belongs to foreign investors…
You can’t legally challenge that.
Under the new control, ERC is building an expansion of a refinery in the Mostorod area of Greater Cairo in a highly congested urban neighborhood, facing an agricultural area.
Wrong place for an oil refinery?
You can’t legally challenge that.
The farmers and landowners were not consulted nor even informed about the refinery expansion; the potential harm to crops was never addressed.
You can’t legally challenge that.
In order to accommodate the refinery expansion, residents were forcibly evicted from their homes and never compensated.
You can’t legally challenge that.
According to the new law, the only one who CAN legally challenge any of that is the government ministry that allowed it in the first place.
