It is important to reiterate that the election of Islamist parties does not automatically mean Islamic government or Islamic polices. This is something the Islamists need to learn. Neoliberalism can not be “Islamized”. It is unjust, oppressive, and crippling to the society, and the population will never accept it
The Muslim Brotherhood in both Egypt and Tunisia followed the path of neoliberalism when they attained power; and this is a betrayal of the population, and it is fundamentally, profoundly un-Islamic; and they suffered the consequences for that.
If they had taken a stand economically in a way similar to Ecuador, for example; cancelled Mubarak’s debts, banned the IMF, banned USAID, nationalized energy resources, enacted protectionist economic policies to give advantages to domestic industry, and increased social welfare spending, and so on; the population would have unified in support for them.
Of course, there would have been massive international opposition, just as there was, and is, against the governments in Ecuador, Venezuela, and others; but they would have had overwhelming domestic support, because they would have been implementing policies consistent with Islam, and for the benefit of the people.
