A reader asked me recently about what sort of diet I would recommend for improving health and fitness.
Frankly, my own diet probably does not adhere to any advice suggested by nutritionists, but, al-Hamdulillah, it works well for me.
I eat only one meal per day, in the evening; usually pasta with meat sauce, and maybe two or three times a week I have a chicken breast. During the day I mostly only eat dates, nuts, and some bread; I drink between 3-4 cups of coffee and I try to drink at least 3 liters of water every day. That’s it.
I do not really see any need to follow a high-carb or high-protein, or any other complicated modern diet plan. Just be moderate, adhere to the diet of the Sunnah. Only eat and drink enough to fill two-thirds of your stomach; never eat so much that you can’t eat another bite. Avoid foods that are just complete junk; chips, syrupy sodas, and so on. I highly recommend dates, they are dense with useful calories and nutrients, and they were a staple food for Rasulullah ﷺ and the Sahabah.
