Any strategy for the pursuit of liberation that does not acknowledge the overarching role of the global imperialist system is futile, to say nothing of astoundingly ignorant.
If you imagine that what happens in Egypt, or Tunisia, Algeria, or anywhere else, is determined exclusively, or even mostly, by or for the interests of local players, your paradigm is obsolete.
The regimes continuously reiterate their absolute commitment and loyalty to foreign investors, lenders, and international business. They openly declare that enacting policies for the benefit of multinationals is their top priority; and they fulfill their promises to them, without fail.
They cut subsidies, raise taxes, devalue their currencies, raise prices, sell state assets, give away land, and grant foreign companies immunity from prosecution or challenge of any kind. They prioritize repayment of debt to foreign lenders above the welfare of their own citizens; they subordinate state policy to the demands of corporate profit at every turn.
Can you not see their blatant subservience to the global owners of capital? It is not subtle. Do you still think these companies are nothing more than harmless private businesses, and not that they are institutions of imperial domination that exert total control over policy-making?
