While, generally speaking, I am not an advocate of street protests; I know there is a sentiment that they are necessary to keep the spirit of revolution alive among the people. I am not convinced that this is true, but if it is, I do not see why street protests cannot be organized in a more effective manner.
Mass demonstrations as expressive actions, symbolic displays of discontent and dissent, do not seem to me to be of any particular usefulness against a regime that knows very well that it does not have the consent of the population, and doesn’t care.
Therefore, expression-oriented demonstrations are essentially only useful as a medium for conveying ideas, not to the regime, but to the people. If this is so, they should be organized to bring attention to specific issues and policies; to educate the population about particular components of their oppression. Demonstrate against the the terms of energy contracts with foreign companies, or against the implementation of the VAT tax, for example, or against the uniform investment law, or against the cutting of subsidies, etc.
If, and this is better, mass demonstrations are to be disruptive in nature, locate them strategically to interfere with multinationals and commercial traffic;not in public squares or streets. Protest outside corporate headquarters, investment firms, commercial ports, and so on. If you follow the hashtags in this post, you will find many potential targets.
Actually confront and challenge the system.
