The general rule is that you should not eat a meal within 1-2 hours before you exercise. You can, and should, eat a small snack (fruit, nuts, etc), just to boost your energy maybe 10-20 minutes before your workout. The problem with exercising on an empty stomach is that it can potentially lead to a breakdown of muscle tissue.
You can, and should, drink water during exercise to keep your body hydrated; particularly when the weather is hot, or if you tend to sweat a lot during your workout. Take a 500 ml bottle with you.
If you have an injury, obviously, you should consult a doctor before you start training. Having said that, I have to admit that I had severe knee and back injuries and, without medical advice, I just started training very gradually to test my limits, and in this way, my injuries eventually healed. So just be sensible.
