What does a country look like that is under imperial domination? Look at the classical models of colonialism. Common characteristics of conquered countries include:
• A permanent and crippling trade deficit so that there is never a sufficient surplus of exports over imports
• De-industrialization and the sabotage of domestic productivity to prevent economic self-sufficiency
• Export dependent economy, with all or most vital raw materials flowing out of the country
• Incapacitated and under-funded governmental administration and services, except the security forces
• Flow of tax revenues and other public monies out of the country to the Imperial power
• Indirect rule via local elites who benefit personally from collaboration with the conquerers
• Severe repression of civil protest
• Promotion of the belief that the imperial power is in all ways superior, benign and dedicated to the welfare of the vanquished peoples.
The only difference really between the classical imperialist models of previous centuries is that they were nation-based, whereas today the imperial hierarchy moves up through multinational corporations to banks and investment firms on up to a handful of super-rich owners and shareholders. This change has made imperial control far more comprehensive and devastating than ever before.
Of the 100 largest economies on earth, 51 are corporations. That means shareholders of the multinationals wield a combined economic power that eclipses the combined economic power of nearly all the world’s national economies.
There is absolutely no way to resolve domestic grievances in Egypt today except by dealing with the corporate imperial system.
