When I began writing about Egypt over 2 years ago, many people told me, particularly “Islamists” that the issues of neoliberalism and corporate domination are too complicated for average people to understand.
These Islamists, by and large, do not understand such issues themselves; so not only do they assume most people will be unable to comprehend them, they also made no effort to educate themselves in order to contribute to broader awareness among the people. They instead keep to a simplistic level of empty rhetoric which they think is sufficient to maintain the support of followers whose intelligence they themselves insult.
I said then that illiterate villagers in the mountains of Guatemala have understood these issues, why shouldn’t Muslims in Egypt understand? Native people in Mexico, in Bolivia, in Peru, can understand; why shouldn’t our people understand? It is not complex. ..it is so blatant and straightforward and even reported frankly in the media: the corporations are in control.
Now you see tribal young people, non-Muslims in one of the poorest, least developed regions in Nigeria, have understood this reality, and are taking their revolt to the corporate doorsteps of the real existing power structure. ..they are not economists, they do not hold conferences in fancy hotels, they do not fight their battle through Facebook ‘likes’…and they are a people estranged from the Truth of Islam!
Does this Ummah not have more right to fight our enemies with sound analysis and reason and intelligent strategy? Are you telling me that the least educated, poorest kafir is more capable of understanding the obvious than the youth of this Ummah?
Wallahi that is embarrassing.
