Remember that the Qur’an is, yes, the Book of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad ï·º , but it is only part of the revelation sent to him. Allah revealed it as both a source of knowledge and legislation, but also as a miracle to support and confirm his status as a Messenger so that people would follow him, meaning follow his Sunnah.
This may be obvious, hopefully it is, to most of us. But, from time to time throughout our history, we find those who negate the authority of the Sunnah; who say that it is not required to follow anything in Islam except what is found in the Book of Allah.
This is based on the fundamental misunderstanding that the Qur’an comprises the totality of revelation to Rasulullah ï·º. To follow what is in the Qur’an, but not what is in the Sunnah, is to take some of what Allah revealed, and to leave some of what Allah revealed.
