As I wrote last night, American media outlets were insistent that the coup attempt last night was successful, even when it was fairly decisively illustrated that it had failed, the most they would say is that “the situation is unclear”. The situation seemed to be very clear to them earlier, to such an extent that presenters were saying about Erdogan, “he has lost control of the country”; when it became actually clear that this was not the case, suddenly the situation became unclear to them.
There were fraudulent reports in the Western media that Erdogan had fled the country and even that he was applying for asylum in Germany! The US embassy in Ankara issued an emergency warning to all Americans in Turkey, in a message misleadingly titled “Turkish Uprising”, saying that martial law had been declared in the country; except it hadn’t been declared.
The perpetrators of the coup attempt hijacked the website of the Turkish Armed Forces and declared this; they forced a television presenter at gunpoint to declare this; but there was no evidence whatsoever that this group had in fact taken control of the government, there was no evidence whatsoever that this group even consisted of a significant segment of the army. Yet the American Embassy took them at their word, despite the fact that the government was still in place, still broadcasting, all government officials were free and safe and accounted for, and the military’s official spokesman denied the declaration by the coup perpetrators. In other words, the US embassy was cooperating with the mutineers’ narrative. They could just as easily, and much more accurately, said, “a renegade faction within the military has claimed to control the country and has declared martial law, the veracity of this claim cannot be confirmed, citizens are advised to stay indoors”. But instead, they stated the claim of the traitors as fact.
There was, in other words, a rush to affirm the success of the coup attempt, in what appears to be a serious case of deluded wishful thinking. This all indicates the complicity in the coup attempt ofat least among some segments of power in the US.
