Neoliberalism has caused the technical failure of government. All instruments of economic power have been removed from the state and placed in private hands. That essentially means that states can no longer undertake programs to improve the lives of the population, because control over every matter affecting their daily lives now falls beyond the pale of the government. Prices, wages, development, employment; everything is managed by the private sector. The state almost has no role, except for providing a mechanism for diverting public funds into corporate accounts.
What has happened over the past 50 years or so, is nothing short of a billionaire’s global revolution that has toppled government after government all around the world, including in the West. They have usurped state sovereignty, subordinated or dismantled every limb of government, and we are left now with a globalized feudal system.
Everything we do, our resistance, our activism, our organizing, our planning; must begin with this awareness. We can’t afford to operate according to obsolete assumptions about power in the world today.
