Right now, the urgent thing is to oppose the IMF loan as strongly as possible; the loan and the policy conditions it stipulates. Defeat this loan, and will create a new space in Egypt for the revolutionary movement. You will permanently change the nature of the game. Indeed, you will open a new chapter in liberation struggles around the world. There is simply no other issue that is even remotely as important as this. If this loan proceeds, your work will become immeasurably more difficult.
Already the revolution is being depleted of human resources; by death, by injury, by imprisonment, but also by poverty and the daily financial struggle to survive. Fewer and fewer people are going to be able, even if they are willing, to participate in the resistance; and many will no longer even be willing, because life is going to become so much harder, and the options so fewer.
At least one effect these policies have on society is to make people unavoidably self-centered and apathetic; because they are barely able to survive; they cannot afford to take risks, they cannot afford to revolt, and because they can’t afford to fight, they can’t afford to care.
But if you succeed…and you must succeed…to force the IMF to retreat, and you are able to leverage the power of multinationals to support the popular will; your liberation will not be far away. This is the most decisive moment Egypt has experienced since 2011.
