Nasser was a military man, Sadat was a military man, Mubarak was…

Posted on August 2, 2014 by Shahid Bolsen

Nasser was a military man, Sadat was a military man, Mubarak was a military man.

A genuinely civilian presidency is impossible in Egypt as long as the army has a controlling stake in the economy. In fact, as long as the neoliberal program is advocated by any party in Egypt as the way to manage the economy, this is tantamount to advocating military rule.

There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the army will never accept to sit by and watch their assets sold off to private investors. Secondly, no population can accept to suffer the consequences of neoliberalism without opposition, and this requires ruthless repression, the exclusive expertise of the army.

Why would the army exert effort to repress the population to support a civilian-run neoliberal process that divests the military of its economic power? The answer is, they won’t.

The answer is, they didn’t. And they never will.

The economic stake of the military must be dealt with, as long as they have something to lose, they will try to not lose it.
