A vision has existed in the West since the 1980s, originally proposed by the Israelis, for the partitioning of Syria and Iraq into sectarian mini-states. In 2011, US Ambassador Robert Stephen Ford was going around Syria trying to recruit and organize armed revolt, after studying under Ambassador John Negroponte in Iraq who had earned the nickname “Mr. Death Squad” while overseeing America’s “Dirty Wars” in Latin America in the 1980s as Ambassador to Honduras.
War in Syria is something the US and Israel had wanted for a long time, with the aim of achieving the plan for dissolving the country. Partition of Syria was openly advocated by the most prominent and influential think tanks in Washington since the beginning of the war; and it is now being taken as the default political settlement to end the conflict, as it is already he de facto reality on the ground.
The “liberated” areas of Syria, then, will become demilitarized zones, likely patrolled by UN peacekeepers under American command and control, with no economy, no infrastructure, no independence, no freedom and no rights; with all resources, both human and natural, exploited by multinational corporations; and locked in a dependent economic relationship with the Alawi state. That is the outcome that was sought, and it is the outcome that was predictable from the beginning; and everything has been done to achieve that, not to prevent it.
