It seems to me that at various times throughout our history, certain aspects of the religion were sidelined, and revivalists brought back emphasis on those aspects. Perhaps it was the marginalization of the importance of Tawhid at one point; or the marginalization of spirituality at another point; or the marginalization of Islamic law at another, or jihad was forgotten; etc, etc. When any aspect of the Deen becomes obscured, and other aspects are over-emphasized, the revival movements work to restore a balance.
In the current era, I think that tolerance and flexibility with regard to permissible differences of opinion, and the value of unemotional, rational thought have become marginalized, and we need to strive to restore these aspects of the religion in our own lives, and in our interactions with one another.
