Muslims do not have a monopoly on moral conservatism. This is part of why the whole dialectic of the West versus Islam is false on a civilizational level; and particularly “America versus Islam”. By and large, Americans are morally conservative. The developments of the modern era; the “sexual revolution” of the 1960s and 70s, the social acceptance of sexual relations outside of marriage, the tolerance of homosexuality, and so on; have been movements driven by a minority in the country, and promoted by the minority who dominate control over the mass media. Rural America still retains a general disapproval of these things, and most of the country is rural.

About 40% of US citizens still believe that sex before marriage is morally wrong, and 93% believe adultery is a sin. A couple living together out of wedlock is still illegal in some US states. About 75% of Americans believe women with children should be stay-at-home moms, and not pursue careers. This reveals that the “clash of civilizations” narrative distorts not only the reality of Muslim culture, but of Western culture as well. The actual society is not what is presented by Hollywood or the music industry. Most people in the United States are morally conservative, and would have no disagreement with Islam’s moral code. Most Americans also believe in God, though fewer numbers of them are believers in the church.

Obviously, there are many other issues that cause animosity between us, some real, some manufactured; and many are political. But the simple fact that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the United States is itself evidence against the notion that there is a fundamental cultural or moral disagreement between Islam and the West. The basic concept of morality is more or less consistent, as in fact, is the view of the family structure. All that remains is the need for da’awah and explanation. And Allah Knows Best.
