The US states that border Mexico, it should be kept in mind, used to BE Mexico. They all have large Hispanic populations, Spanish is widely spoken, and they are culturally and economically linked to Mexico. Most people in these states do not want a wall along the border, they want to maintain mobility and connectedness, for obvious reasons. Trump’s plan to deport illegal immigrants (which would be even more aggressive than Obama, who deported more people than all previous presidents combined), to build a wall along the border, and to impose hefty taxes on Mexican imports, would be very bad for the Mexican economy, which would in turn be bad for the economies of the border states.
