Tolerance and forgiveness of others, it seems to me, do not require more than having a relatively accurate appraisal of oneself. We all struggle with our Nafs, we all struggle with Shaytaan; sometimes we win, sometimes we lose, and neither of these states of winning or losing is permanent. The trick is to not let your empathy become gullibility or naiveté, nor to let your recognition of someone’s sin become personal loathing. And, of course, this applies to our own self-evaluation as well.
