Right-wingers in the United States argue that providing welfare to poorer citizens constitutes a greater expansion of government which undermines the innate human spirit that drives people to achieve and better themselves by giving them “handouts”. But they fail to explain how being paid minimum wage as a cashier at Walmart and struggling to keep afloat financially helps foster that spirit of infinite possibility.
