Despite our pretensions, the Enlightenment, it is unavoidable to recognize, had zero rehabilitative impact on human nature.

It is something I have been saying for a very long time, but never becomes unnecessary to reiterate: Formal, acknowledged structures and institutions of power are not the only, and often not the dominating, powers that control societies and our lives, and each and every one of them need to be recognized and made accountable.
