Government is necessary for a community, a nation, a cohesive collection of people. For us, this Government will be expected to adhere to the rules followed by the population. The belief system that makes us a community to begin with
The real fight is not between Right and Left, or between various identity groups. These are distractionary battles to sow division and to prevent society from confronting the dominance of institutions of private power, corporations, which are authoritarian in structure and in method, and which largely control the daily lives of billions of people with complete unaccountability.
Helpful translation of the obfuscatory language of Capitalism:
Whenever you hear an economics expert or CEO say something like “the Market will decide”, the “Market” here means you.
We have tremendous unused power.
There was a time when the idea of an Atheist Jew was an oxymoron…because, obvious reasons. But it has become an accepted category — not only because of referring to Jews as an ethnicity (which is quite dubious), but because of the “shared experience/history, and traditions, etc. Mark my words, we will see (maybe soon) the emergence of a group of people who refer to themselves as Atheist Muslims.
It occurs to me that the proliferation of “identity politics” seems to play very well into fundamental corporate game plans. It is literally the breaking down of society along narrow demographic lines ; age, race, gender, sexuality, and so on; with these niche- like criteria, these “aspects” of people, becoming definitive of group identities. In theory, this should make marketing much simpler and more effective. You could probably make an argument that identity politics has even developed as an indirect result of corporate marketing strategies
Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Amazon, each in their own ways, have become the predominant drivers and managers of not only social and political discourse, understanding, information, and communication; but also even economic and political policy. Together they form a tyranny that spans the globe. If you have followed my writings for any length of time, you will know that private sector power has displaced government as the main force controlling our lives, and that political activism, indeed, revolution, must focus on imposing accountability upon corporate institutions of private power; either through democratization of their influence, or by toppling them if they resist democratization. Re-framing political struggle in this way gives us considerable strength, as all of these entities are reliant upon our support for their existence. It seems to me that today it is imperative for us to mobilize as much as possible against these four powers. We made them what they are, and we can un-make them.
Don’t imagine that the so-called Culture Wars are merely a distraction. Changing the culture is part of a long-term project. Politics and legislation follow the culture. The ultimate aim is power, and that aim is being pursued strategically. The institutions that articulate, maintain, and convey culture; particularly the family unit and religious institutions; must be steadfast, and mustn’t be displaced in favor of other, newer and untested producers of culture; like popular and social media.
Someone needs to break it to the West that the Dark Ages occurred in Europe, not the entire globe; and that when Europe stumbled out of the Darkness to discover Reason, rather than leading the world into the Light, they were themselves, actually, late to the party. The Enlightenment was when Europe passed puberty, while non-Western civilizations already had mortgages, were married and had kids.
powerful people and powerful institutions determining the fate of nations, circumventing democratic processes, dodging accountability and transparency…yet this is not taking place in smoke-filled backrooms, it plays out with great fanfare and applause. The fact is, the word “conspiracy” is applied to any rational assessment of very normal power maneuvers between major actors when that assessment is that these maneuvers are nefarious, to discredit the assessment itself. But “conspiracies” happen all the time, we just don’t call them that, precisely because they are so standard to the operation of business and government that they are mundane and accepted.
Western civilization has gotten so much so inhumanly wrong that it seems to me almost an alien endeavour wholly unfamiliar with the species. That is not to say that the values trumpeted by the Enlightenment are themselves wrong, but those values predate the Enlightenment in every place but Europe, and Europe was far more successful in appropriating them as mottoes rather than as values to realistically incorporate into human society. To put it very briefly, the collective West seems to have been stuck in a cycle, for as long as anyone can remember, of behaving atrociously and then reacting to its own atrocities, in a kind of bulimia of violence and oppression, devouring the world one moment, and vomiting on it the next.
