The only rational option at this point is to shift the focus of political organizing from government to the corporate sector. Their political power is overriding , it is real, it is quantifiable, but until now, it Is unaccountable. Our governments, whether in Egypt or elsewhere, have been taken over by private power. It simply makes no sense anymore to seek redress for our grievances from subordinate governments; this is a futile endeavor.
There is no reason to feel hopeless or overwhelmed. There is a much greater opportunity to impose accountability on business than there is to impose accountability on politicians, even in the most ideal of democratic models.
There are a number of factors that make the corporate imperial system highly susceptible to popular activism. Their power is highly concentrated; their interests are vast and diverse; their goals are transparent; their behavior and reactions are predictable. It is conceivable that we can develop a new dynamic mechanism of checks and balances between the public, business, and the government. In fact, it is the only conceivable option.
