The drivers of national economies are no longer tied to the territorial State itself, this leaves the State with very limited capabilities to regulate the power of global capital.
Overthrowing a dictator no longer means changing the power structure. Nor do Democratic elections.
We have to engage the forces of global capital directly. Since they are not elected rulers, we cannot impose accountability by voting them out. But we certainly can impose accountability by disrupting their interests, and making their presence in our countries conditional on their use of their influence in ways that adhere to the public interest.
