Al-Fudayl Ibn ‘Iyaad said:
“There is not a single Ra`ees who loves his position except that: he has envy of others; he will transgress against the people; he follows the faults of the people; and he dislikes that anyone other than him is mentioned with good.”
We see these qualities already among those seeking power, so what if they attain it?
It is not righteousness to seek power, but rather seek to make the powerful righteous.
Fight for justice, not for position.
