Simply fighting against the system, being in opposition, developing tactics and strategies for bringing down the government; that is not revolution.
Revolution means a fundamental and comprehensive change in the ruling system. That did not happen in Egypt until now. Genuine revolution is not a spontaneous event, but a process.
There has to be grassroots organizing, awareness, and the development of political and economic alternatives. This is another reason why it is so crucial to focus on actual issues instead of individuals.
Most of the revolutionary groups have had very little to say about vital issues like debt cancellation, renegotiation of energy contracts, subsidy reform, nationalization of natural resources like oil and gas, privatization, monetary policy, trade policy, regulation of foreign investment, and so on.
Egypt is being invaded by the forces of neoliberalism, yet most of the Islamist groups do not even know what it is. Everyone wants to remove the military from power, but very few even address the reasons why the military is in power in the first place. The army’s stake in the economy is a major issue. As long as they continue to hold that much of a stake in the economy, you will have very little chance of having civilian government; and you will have very little chance of having an army that protects the republic.
When the military becomes a business class, soldiers become little more than a private security company to protect the army’s financial interests.
If you do not educate the population about these issues, and you only focus on changing the personnel in government, you have not changed anything significant, and Egypt’s own experience proves that.
So, if your party, or your candidate comes to the government, what is the plan? Overthrowing the ruling system does not by itself guarantee that the new ruling system will be any different, as again, Egypt’s own experience proves. It is not enough to be against the current regime, you have to know your own priorities and policies, and what changes need to be made.
