Approximately 45% of Foreign Direct Investment into Egypt is in the energy sector. According to statistical analysis of FDI in other countries, only one job is created for every $2 million invested in this sector.
It should also be pointed out that statistics on FDI job creation do not necessarily mean jobs for the domestic population, particularly in the energy sector. Multinational energy companies frequently recruit workers from within the corporation, moving expertise from one site to another. In many instances, they also recruit workers from places like India, as it is useful for companies to bind workers not only by employment contracts, but also by visas, to keep them committed to the job. FDI statistics also do not include the number of jobs eliminated by corporations to maximize profitability.
