While cardiovascular exercise is one of the best ways to lose weight, it is also important to remember that muscle basically acts like the body’s oven for burning fat. When you build muscle you automatically improve your body’s metabolism which means you will utilize calories more efficiently, leaving less excess energy that would otherwise be converted into fat.

If you concentrate only on cardiovascular training, you can actually lose muscle, thus inhibiting your potential for burning calories. So your training should combine the two elements of increasing your heart rate and building lean muscle.

Bear in mind that I am not talking about standard weightlifting, such as bicep curls and so on. The muscles in the arms are some of the smallest muscles in the body, so building them up will not contribute significantly to weight loss or improving your metabolism. Rather, you should focus on building muscle in your legs (particularly the thighs) back and chest, as these contain the largest muscles in the human body.

Insha’Allah I will post a clip in the next few days with exercises that emphasize these groups of muscles and combine muscle-building with cardiovascular training.
These are also the muscles which are most practical to strengthen for dealing with conflict scenarios, as they are the muscles you rely upon most when you are fighting or being fought, or escaping from a confrontation.
