Don’t hate your own people more than you love your enemies.
The hatred and violence of a regime cannot damage a revolution more than revolutionaries’ own contempt for the masses. If you do not empathize enough with your people to understand their apathy; you will never cure them of it. They will see your hopes and aspirations for society as nothing more than a threat to their survival which will only result in disaster.
In any conflict situation, we have three reflexive responses; Fight, flight, or freeze.
One person reacts to danger by defending himself because he feels it gives him the best chance of survival. Another person flees, running for his life. Another simply stands still and does nothing, feeling that perhaps the danger will pass if only he can himself appear non-threatening and passive. The vast majority of people react in this way. They freeze.
This is not only true in one-on-one conflicts, it is also true on a societal level. Some people fight oppression, some flee from it, and some, the majority, simply freeze and do nothing.
Most of the people who react to a threat by fighting have been trained to do so. Just as on an individual level, a person needs to learn how to fight before he will react to danger by fighting, so too, the people in a society must be trained to confront oppression before they will respond to injustice in any way other than passivity.
